The IBEW Joint Apprentice and Training Committee (JATC) offers a 5-year New York State Registered Inside Electrical Apprenticeship program.

What is an Apprenticeship?  An apprenticeship is a structured training program that combines paid on-the-job training with related instruction in the classroom.  Apprentices earn a living wage while learning the skills, safety practices, and knowledge needed to become highly skilled journeyman electricians.  you’ll progress to become a Journeyman Wireman.

Journeyman Wireman are skilled in installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. You’ll work with wiring, lighting, power distribution, green energy solutions, and advanced technologies to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable service.

How to Apply.  If you are interested in applying to the apprentice program of IBEW Local 106, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

• Must be at least 17 years old (I will be at least 18 at the time of indenture).
• Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma with a passing grade in high school algebra or post high school algebra course.
• Must obtain a score of five or higher on the Electrical Apprentices Selection Test Battery. How to Prepare?
• Understand that if you can verify having a minimum of 4,000 hours of substantiated experience in the electrical construction trade, you do not need to meet the education requirements above.  Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
• Must have lived within the local’s geographic jurisdiction for at least one year – all of Chautauqua County and parts of Alleghany and Cattaraugus Counties.
• Must have a driver’s license – apprentices will be required to operate company vehicles.
• Must be able and willing to get to and from various job sites and attend all related classroom training.
• Must be physically able to do the work, which includes working form ladders and in confined spaces.
• Will be required to take and pass a physical examination, including a drug test, at the committee’s expense – if accepted into the program.
• Will be required to submit to a background check, at the committee’s expense – if accepted into the program.
• If you are a Veteran who wishes to receive credit for military training and experience, you must submit your DD214, after selection for the program.

Applications are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Union Hall and must be completed in person.

After acceptance into the apprenticeship program, apprentices are assigned to work with one of our signatory contractors. Apprentices work full-time in the electrical trade, gaining valuable hands-on experience under the supervision of skilled journeymen while earning competitive wages.

Apprentices are paid for all on-the-job training and receive progressive wage increases as they advance through the program. In addition, employer-paid fringe benefits, including health insurance and retirement benefits, are provided in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

To complement their field experience, apprentices are required to attend related classroom instruction two evenings per week during the school year, which runs from September through May. Over the course of the five-year program, apprentices develop the technical knowledge, practical skills, and safety training necessary to become highly skilled journeyman electricians.
